Buffalo in Brooklyn

This weekend was all about BK. Although I do love brooklyn I don't find myself there to often especially for food. I know Brooklyn offers some of the best foods, authenticity and unique atmosphere's in NYC. So while researching what to do on a budget one weekend I was pleased that this event was not only free but was going to force me to go to Brooklyn. And best of all it was a Buffalo Wing contest. What's better than a wing contest. I wasn't sure what to expect but I went ready to stand in a long line in some pretty cold weather and an empty stomach. The Red Start Bar on Greenpoint Avenue, just a block down from the G train, was ready to put on its second successful Wing contest with 14 different vendors ready and hoping to take the crown.

After a long wait of about an hour I finally found myself at the front. Upon Entering you were greeted right away with a table of wings and the first restaurant/bar in the competition. Once you start it is hard to stop, its table after table of works handing you a wing hoping you liked theirs better than the last one. It was a packed house at the Red Star bar, with a line of people still waiting to enter as I tried to taste all of the wings. Once you walk up the stairs to the next room there are several more table awaiting for your visit. Some of the vendors had already ran out of wings and were waiting for more to be delivered. Now, I must say Buffalo Wings are a favorite of mine. But, I don't always have to have the traditional buffalo wing style to be satisfied. As much as I do love the traditional flavors I am always interested in what unique versions people can come up with for their version of wings. Here at Red Star you found a variety of Buffalo wing flavors and styles and I was open to try them all.

I narrowed it down to three of my favorites. Red Star's own raspberry BBQ wings. They were saucy, not to soft and flavorful. Very different than its surrounding competitors on the second floor.

Also on the second floor was Buffalo Boss another of my favorite. Now, these wings were very seasoned, with what seemed to be a lemon, pepper taste. A smaller size wing than I am use to, but they were able to draw many people over with the fact they used organic chicken wings.

But my all time favorite wings were those made by the infamous family owned Super Wings. Super Wings has become a well known Brooklyn spot over the past year after the owner was challenged on Bobby Flay's hit show "Throwdown with Bobby Flay". The owner competed against Bobby Flay for the best buffalo wings and she took the crown. Since then business has been booming. And I know why, the wings are awesome. Being of Caribbean decent they use spices and flavors from their Jamaican background to give their wings unique flavors different from everyone else. This Saturday they choose there ginger wings with a small side of pineapple salad. All the spices, marinades, and salad dressings are made from scratch. The wings were sweet with a little bite to it. The pineapple salad was a perfect compliment and I must say very delicious as well. I was ready to have a full serving of both.
